If you don’t know where to begin with decorating your home for the holidays, below are some ideas to help you on your way.

Exterior Decor

For some of us, we are starting from scratch, while others are seasoned pros looking for additional ideas.

Whatever the case, we are in this together and the end result will be a spectacular exterior for the holidays.

When we think of Christmas holiday decor, we partly associate it with lights.

Lights are beautiful because they create an illusion of some wondrous fantasy.

It lavishes your home with unspeakable beauty.

Some ways to illuminate your exterior include incorporating:

• multi-colored lights
• icicle lights
• a lighted North Pole
• lighted candy canes
• fiber optic penguins
• lighted reindeer
• a lighted sign that reads, “Happy Holidays”

There is even a lighted Santa on a sleigh with his reindeer that looks stunning on a rooftop. This is a sure way to add so much brilliance and sparkle to your exterior.

However, when installing these lights on the higher points of your home, take extra precautions to ensure that you are careful to avoid accidents.

Remember that it’s important to have someone present with you while you install these lights to minimize potential accidents.

In addition, you can incorporate lights into wreaths.

You can also hang garland over the door and decorate it with lights and place lights inside faux topiaries to enhance the beauty of the plants as well as draw attention to the front entrance.

Some other ideas for Christmas home decorating include dressing up your lawn with large reindeer figurines or a snowman figurine.

You can even put an inflatable Santa and snowman that has a continuous snow feature for that added holiday spirit.

If your mailbox seems left out, you can place a decorative mailbox swag for that extra little touch.

Another outdoor idea includes hanging a lovely wreath on your door.

You have so many to choose from and they are available in different colors.

If you do not want to drive a nail through your front door, consider a wreath hanger.

You can find them in different styles, with some having bells on them.

And last, but not least, welcome people into your home with a lovely holiday doormat.

You can have it personalized or simply find one with a nice poinsettia pattern or holiday type theme to adorn your front entry.

I have given you quite a list of possibilities, and it may seem overwhelming because there’s so much to do.

The important thing is to work within your budget and try to do a few things a day because in doing so, you will accomplish something every day and will be one step closer to finishing the exterior Christmas holiday decor.

In its 19th festive year, Fantasy in Lights at Callaway Gardens features more than a dozen larger-than-life holiday scenes illuminated with eight million twinkling lights. Scenes include Snowflake Valley, a winter wonderland of snowflakes and white lights, a Magical Christmas Garden and Santa's Workshop, complete with animated versions of Santa's elves busy at work. Set apart from the drivable route, two spectacular scenes combine narration, music and choreographed lights to tell the stories of Twas the Night Before Christmas and The Nativity. Visitors may enjoy the magical tour in their own vehicles or by riding the Jolly Trolley. (Sunday, November 21, 2010 is the annual March of Dimes Night Walk. On this night only, no vehicles are allowed on the drive. Everyone must walk, and umbrella strollers for children are allowed.)

The Christmas Village, an indoor shopping and dining area, features roaming Fantasy in Lights characters and the chance to visit Santa. The roar of the engines is replaced with the twinkling of two million lights during Bristol Motor Speedway's annual Speedway in Lights. Along the four and one-half mile route, including a drive around the World's Fastest Half-Mile, visitors delight in over 200 displays.

    * Symphony of Lights (new) - The largest display to be added in Speedway in Lights's 14-year history, this light show features a large Christmas tree, dancing snowflakes, arches and fountains, consisting of more than 300,000 LED lights synchronized to music.

Wrap up your home in red holiday ribbon and plenty of gold!

There are many little ways you can bring the holiday theme to your home by adding the Christmas colors to stuff around you. Put the red holiday ribbon around the candles, drape the photos on the walls in gift wrapper and add dangling gold decorations and tiny flying angels wherever you think its appropriate. You can never have enough festive charm around the house. Make sure though that you do this in-sync with the theme you have chosen. Christmas Home Tour

Dearborn is headquarters for The Ford Motor Company. Back in the good old days, Henry Ford built a neighborhood of home for Ford employees known now as The Ford Homes. Last weekend, several of these homes were selected to be part of a Christmas home tour. One was a home I designed several years ago.

I didn’t do the Christmas decorations. Those were done by current client who owns her own floral decoration company. She did a great job.

It’s nice to see the house looking so good after several years with young children. This was such a fun project with 2 great clients. It was nice of them to send me these photos.

My favorite decorating ideas here are the mantle – I love the way Tracy did the lighting. I also love the basket filled with poinsettias. I don’t really like them, but they look great grouped like this.
