Make a list of what you want from a bedroom. Need a room you can escape, watch TV, work or sleep? Do you want a very large bed and large storage capacity? Would you like a particular look? Be realistic about what can be achieved in the space you have.

The plan

Start by drawing a plan of structural elements, such as the chimney breast, windows and doors - basically things that can not be moved. Then experiment with the position of the key pieces - beds, wardrobes, chests, remembering that you need space for drawers to open and walk around the bed.

Bed

Go to the largest bed you can. Disruption of a partner is one of the most common causes of sleep problems. As to where to position, choose the obvious and put the headboard against a wall, but a little lateral thinking can free up valuable wall space. Try to move your bed in the middle of the room and use the wall behind a closet with sliding doors. Even if you do not believe in feng shui, it is best to plan your room so your bed is not just behind the door, as it can make the room feel very closed in.
